The Evolution of Budo Boxing

My name is Phil Hogan and although my brother Gary and I started out doing karate, we have since had many years of extensive mixed martial arts training. As an example, Gary won the Silver Medal in the Men's Open Final of the Two-Stick Unarmoured Division at the World Stick-Fighting Titles in Jakarta in September '07. Click here.

More relevantly though, we've also had 20 years experience supervising security crews for our own businesses, which have included numerous large bar, pub, nightclub & live band venues. Accordingly, we've also had a lot of experience with real self defence situations as a direct result of such.

In the circumstances, we became frustrated by the lack of 'convenient' and 'practical' self defence training available. I emphasise the word 'convenient' because there are some good martial arts styles but part of the problem is that it usually takes a long time to learn them properly and in the modern world, who's got the time? Particularly after an event on Saturday the 12th August 2006 (click here).

So, when confronted with the prospect of having to train staff (click here) and future generations of our own family to defend themselves, we decided to take a leaf out of Chinese Kung Fu history (click here) and develop our own 'simple' in-house style. Particularly given the following 20 key observations (click here).

Conclusions from our 20 key observations?

The best combination in our view is primarily Boxing mixed with low level Karate kicks and coupled with blocks for all levels but also mixed with some grappling (Ju Jitsu applications). We do emphasise 'stand up' grappling techniques though as explained under Note(4) in our list of observations attached.

In fact, though few realise it, that's essentially what Kick Boxing was originally, a combination of kicking, boxing and grappling! Note the following quote from the Budo Info Gallery (click here).
